In Episode 1, award winning director Olly Blackburn discusses creative process and collaboration with award winning composer and songwriter Daniel Pemberton.

Daniel Pemberton is an Academy Award nominated and Emmy winning English composer and songwriter. Having composed for over 130 major industry media projects, Daniel has worked with top film and television directors including Ridley Scott, Guy Ritchie, Danny Boyle, Aaron Sorkin, and others. Recent projects include the Marvel Siderman sequels, The Bad Guys, Being the Ricardos, and Enola Holmes.

Olly Blackburn is an award­-winning film director and screenwriter. He trained as an historian and after spending time as a journalist and copywriter found himself working in feature films, television and commercials. His films have played at major festivals including Telluride, Sundance, Edinburgh, Austin and London. In TV drama Olly’s work ranges from tough contemporary thrillers like Amazon’s The Widow and StartUp, to the human drama of Jack Thorne’s Glue and period pieces like Victoria and Andrew Davies’ adapatation of Jane Austen’s Sanditon.

Terrific interview. Loved Daniel’s insights, especially with the prediction and redundancy of big block movies and score. You assume everyone will survive and thus, the music is predictable. It made me think of Die Hard which actually subverted expectations and because of it, the score was driving and unpredictable. I also loved that he referenced Vangelis. I have Blade Runner score on my playlist because that stayed with me.

Question. Will you do an episode that deals w soundtracks ala Scorcese mob stuff and 70s drug rock? Marrying two inconsistent genres to create nee language? I also loved D’s dynamite reference. Music is still vastly underrated as a large component in film.

Thanks for the comments Tony. Yes we will be doing future episodes on source music Vs score (that’s something I wanted to ask Daniel about but we just didn’t have time — he did the score to Birds of Prey which is predominantly source music) and we’ll be speaking to some leading music supervisors about this too.
