In Episode 3, director Olly Blackburn discusses creative process, collaboration, and the fusion of music and film with composer Ruth Barrett.
Emmy-nominee Ruth Barrett is one of the UK’s most sought-after film and television composers. Her music is unmistakably original and eclectic, spanning feature films and high-end TV drama.
Ruth’s most recent work includes scoring the upcoming Amazon series The Terminal List directed by Antoine Fuqua, starring Chris Pratt, Taylor Kitsch, and Constance Wu, as well as both series of NBC’s Law & Order: Organized Crime. Her film credits include City of Tiny Lights and Legacy, both directed by Pete Travis (Dredd), Harry Brown (co-written with Martin Phipps), starring Michael Caine, Toast, directed by S.J Clarkson, and the gritty Paul Abbott penned feature Twenty8k. Further television work comprises the Pete Travis directed series Bloodlands, The Sister for ITV, Sanditon – based on Jane Austen’s unfinished novel, Bodyguard – Jed Mercurio’s hit series for BBC, ITV/ Mammoth Screen’s Victoria and four series of The Durrells. Other projects include David Hare’s Collateral (BBC) starring Carey Mulligan, Critical (Sky), Love Nina (BBC) starring Helen Bonham Carter, Wuthering Heights (ITV/PBS) starring Tom Hardy, Wallander (BBC) and Whitechapel (ITV).
Ruth studied composition at The Royal Academy of Music and read music at Cambridge University. She started her career composing for theatre and commercials before setting up a music production company, Rubykon, with composer and engineer Ruskin Williamson. Between them, they have worked on numerous documentaries, ad campaigns and short films.
Olly Blackburn is an award-winning film director and screenwriter. He trained as an historian and after spending time as a journalist and copywriter found himself working in feature films, television and commercials. His films have played at major festivals including Telluride, Sundance, Edinburgh, Austin and London. In TV drama Olly’s work ranges from tough contemporary thrillers like Amazon’s The Widow and StartUp, to the human drama of Jack Thorne’s Glue and period pieces like Victoria and Andrew Davies’ adapatation of Jane Austen’s Sanditon.
